St Mary’s Uniform Expectations

At St Mary’s College, students are expected to wear the uniform as outlined below. Please note that uniform is seen as professional dress and there are clear standards around how uniform should be worn. All students will have regular uniform checks to ensure we are upholding consistent high standards. All instances of uniform defiance will be logged, and escalating sanctions will be in place for persistent offenders.

 In the final analysis, decisions regarding whether a student’s uniform and appearance comply with Directors’ requirements, are a matter of judgement for the pastoral team and senior staff.

Outlined below are our expectations on uniform and appearance. 

• Skirts - All students choosing to wear a skirt must wear the school skirt which is available from Steady School Wear. Skirt waistbands should not be rolled up with the intention of shortening the length of the skirt. Skirt length must be below the knee. Please note that this is not a compulsory item as girls can choose to wear unbranded grey trousers.
• Trousers – All students wearing trousers must wear smart, mid grey trousers. Please note that jeans, chinos, tight or tapered fashion trousers are not permitted, this means trousers that are tight around the calf. Loose fitting or flared trousers are also not allowed, along with trousers that are ‘jersey’ material are not allowed. Trousers should be worn at the waist and should not be ‘sagging’.
• Shorts - If students choose to wear shorts, these must be purchased from Steady Schoolwear. Please note that this is not a compulsory item as students can choose to wear unbranded grey trousers.
• Fleeces / Jumpers / Cardigans – All students can wear a St Mary’s fleece, jumper or cardigan, which can also be purchased at Steady School Wear.
• Blue St Mary’s Polo Shirt – All students are expected to wear a blue St Mary’s polo t-shirt, which can be purchased at Steady School Wear.
• Shoes – All students must wear smart, black shoes. Black trainers, including ‘leather look’ trainers, are not permitted. Footwear must be a shoe – boots are not allowed. Shoes should be all black – coloured stitching, excessive embellishments and brand tags should not be worn. Please see some guidance and images on the document below to indicate which styles of footwear students should be wearing.
• Socks – Students should wear a plain black, navy blue, grey or white socks. These should be a full sock with no ankle on show. Trainer socks are not acceptable. Tights should not be patterned and must be in neutral, black or grey only.
• Outdoor Jackets – Students are not permitted to wear their own outdoor jacket on site. Only St Mary’s College outer jackets are permitted which can be purchased from Steady School Wear.
• PE Uniform - All students are expected to wear a blue St Mary’s College PE polo shirt and PE hoodie, which can be purchased at Steady School Wear.  PE shorts, socks must be plain navy blue. Please see guidance below for the full options of PE uniform items available.

Guidance on acceptable items of uniform

*PLEASE NOTE*

All pupils will be involved in outdoor PE lessons during the winter months and therefore should your child require additional items of clothing in order to keep warm and dry, only the following items will be permitted:

• Navy/Black under garments/thermal vests/t-shirts
• Plain black/navy gloves
• Plain black/navy woollen hat (no baseball-style caps)

Other information

Bags – All students are expected to come to school with their own bag – this needs to be a strong, sturdy rucksack, no handbag-style bags are allowed. Any student who does not have a bag will be provided with one for the day. SMC school bags may be purchased from Steady School Wear should you wish to.

Jewellery – Students are only permitted to wear a discreet crucifix tucked under their polo shirt and a watch (except in PE). Smart watches are not permitted. Please note that translucent plastic jewellery/studs are not permitted.

Make up – please note that make up should not be worn to school. This includes false eyelashes of any length / style.

Nails – Students should not have their nails painted. False nails are not allowed.

Hair styles – Students should not have unnatural colours in their hair and hair styles must reflect the professional standards of appearance for school.

Expensive or fashionable items of clothing and personal effects must NOT be brought to school as the school cannot take any responsibility for valuables.

Essential Equipment

A reminder that students need to be fully equipped each day. This includes bringing a suitable bag to school. This cannot be a handbag but must be a rucksack style which is large enough to fit in all essential equipment. Students who do not bring a bag will be provided with one.

• 2 black pens
• 1 red pen
• 1 whiteboard pen
• 1 ruler
• 1 pencil
• 1 scientific calculator
• 1 protractor
• 1 pair of compasses
• 1 pencil sharpener
• 1 rubber
• Chromebook with charger (Chromebook should be charged)
