Our approach to the Media curriculum

The Media department have achieved outstanding results for over ten years and we continue to provide a creative and theoretical pathway for Key stage 4 and Key stage 5 students at St Marys. We offer a range of subjects including BTEC Creative Media Production, A level Film Studies and A level Media Studies. We are a dynamic department and Media Studies allow students to develop practical skills to create their own media products as part of their coursework. These media products can range from creating magazines, music videos, print adverts, creating shorts films and screen plays. Within Media you will develop the ability to interpret and understand how media products have been created, and the social political aspects of them.

Our Learning Journey:

Key Stage 4

In year 10 and 11 we offer Educes GCSE Media and BTEC Tech Award in Creative Media. Students have the opportunity to study a range of Media products from music videos to newspapers. All students will create practical work and will take their own photos as well as use software packages such as Adobe Photoshop and Indesign.

Key Stage 5 (16-19 qualifications)

Students can study a range of courses in sixth form, as a department we offer BTEC Creative Media Production where students will study a range of Media and create magazine double page spreads and music videos, BTEC Media students also have the opportunity to work with magazine editors and documentary makers. We also offer Educes A level Media and A level Film Studies. Both courses mix theoretical analysis and practical work together. In Film Studies you will study a range of films including Classic Hollywood to Experimental films as well as making your own short film. A level Media studies offers students the chance to study a range of different media from newspapers to charity campaigns as well as create their own practical production.
