WW1 Centenary Battlefields tour

29th November 2018

As a result of our involvement, SMC were offered a place on this Poetry by Heart trip to Belgium and Northern France. The trip was subsidised through government funding and allowed English teacher Miss Roberts and two of our Year 11 pupils to explore literature from and about the First World War in the places that inspired them. It was an incredible experience for our students and has also enriched Miss Robert’s  own experience regarding teaching poems and prose from this era.

Year 11 students Katie and Caitlin provided some thoughts on their experience:

“Where to start, there’s so much we could say but so few words to say it in.

Simply put it was humbling. It’s an experience we will never forget – one which, in just a few days enriched out historical and poetical knowledge as well as furthering our emotional attachments to the First World War.

We’re so incredibly grateful for St Mary’s College organisation and links with Poetry By Heart without which we would never have had this amazing opportunity. We cannot say thank you enough.”
