Post 16 Academies of Sport

St Mary's College has an outstanding reputation for sporting excellence locally, regionally and nationally. Our established Sports Academy offer offers students form Hull, the East Riding of Yorkshire and beyond a unique opportunity for students to pursue their sporting aspirations combined with an "outstanding" academic or vocational education. There are SM6 Academies of Sport in the following activities:- Football, Rugby League, Netball, , Table Tennis, Badminton and Coaching and Volunteering. Bespoke programmes are also put together for other sports.

Students have the option of studying either AS/A2 level courses, BTEC Level 3 National Diplomas or Level 2 qualifications across a wide range of subjects. These courses are delivered by outstanding and innovative staff.

Applicants need to be studying a full-time College programme and be under 19 years of age on the 31st August 2017. Students are appointed to the Sports Academy on a competitive basis and judged on their performance, motivation and commitment to their selected sport. The Sports Academy is integrated within the overall College programme. Students play in sports fixtures or train on a Wednesday afternoons and attend coaching and fitness based sessions as arranged.

 St Mary’s College Sports Academy Benefits

·                Access to our outstanding SMC Sport Sports Village facilities including state of the art 4G synthetic pitch, 8 tennis/6 netball court MUGA, two four court sports halls, one specialist trampolining/gymnastic and table tennis sports hall, fitness suite and dance studio.

How do I become a member of the St Mary’s College Sports Academy?

Selection interviews and trials will take place in September 2017 where you will be trialed and/or interviewed for your chosen sport. Once selected, you must attend every coaching/training session demonstrating a professional attitude in developing your sporting ability and fulfilling your academic potential.

You will be required to sign a formal agreement which explains your commitment to St Mary’s College and our commitment to you.

Football Academy : Men’s

The Men’s Football Academy was established in 2010 and now has a significant local reputation. St Mary’s College offers a two to three year specialist programme for students to develop and perfect their footballing skills

The Men’s Football Academy is run in partnership with the Tigers Sport and Education Trust supported by Hull City AFC. The structured training schedule allows 7-9 hours coaching and weekly match fixtures. The team plays in the BCS North East Performance League and National Knock-out competition as well as the ESFA National Schools competition. The aim is to prepare 16-19 year old students for professional and semi-professional football or a university academic education combined with sport.   

The Football Academy coaches all have recognised UEFA qualifications and experience of working with youth players, as well as personal success as players themselves. They are committed to the sport and aim to nurture all students to the highest standard possible. In 2010, St Mary’s College won the BCS North East Merit League and currently are in the last 64 of the ESFA National Cup. Our students combine their football academy commitments with local and regional representation. Over 15 players have represented the nationally successful Humberside Schools Under 18 team and ten players have represented the East Riding County FA Junior team.

Rugby League Academy: Men’s

The Men’s Rugby League Academy is an exciting new addition to the St Mary’s College Sports Academy. St Mary’s College offers a two to three year specialist programme for students to develop and perfect their rugby league skills

The Men’s Rugby League Academy is run in partnership with Hull FC. The structured training schedule allows 7-9 hours coaching and weekly match fixtures. The team will play in the Under 19 College Yorkshire Conference and Champion Colleges competition. The aim is to prepare 16-19 year old students for professional and semi-professional rugby league or a university academic education combined with sport.   

The programme is run by ex-Hull FC player Mike Burnett who has extensive professional rugby league knowledge and Super League playing experience. He has recognised RFL and RFU qualifications and experience of working with youth players within the Hull FC Youth Performance team. He is committed to the sport and aims to nurture all students to the highest standard possible.

Table Tennis Academy

The Table Tennis Academy is an exciting new addition to the St Mary’s College Sports Academy. St Mary’s College offers a two to three year specialist programme for students to develop and perfect their table tennis skills.

The Table Tennis Academy is run in partnership with the St Mary’s College Table Tennis club. The structured training schedule allows 7-9 hours coaching alongside ETTA Level 2 coach Shane Bradley. Shane has a long history of nurturing many students to local, regional and county success. He is the current coach to nationally ranked St Mary’s College player Harry Dai. Our table tennis teams coached regularly achieve County, Zonal and Regional titles in ESTTA competitions.

Students will have the opportunity to play in ESTTA individual and team competitions as well as BCS competitions. They will have the opportunity to supplement their competitive opportunities through our links with local table tennis clubs. The aim is to prepare 16-19 year old students with a structured development pathway to a university academic education combined with sport.

Badminton Academy

The Badminton Academy is an exciting new addition to the St Mary’s College Sports Academy. St Mary’s College offers a two to three year specialist programme for students to develop and perfect their badminton skills.

The Badminton Academy is run in partnership with the Badminton England accredited Hull and East Riding Performance Centre. The structured training schedule allows 7-9 hours coaching alongside Badminton England Level 2 coach Paul Pratt. Paul has a long history of nurturing many students to local, regional and county success.

Students will have the opportunity to play in Yorkshire Schools Badminton individual and mixed competitions as well as BCS National Cup competitions. They will have the opportunity to supplement their competitive opportunities through our links with local badminton clubs and Hull and District Badminton League competitions. The aim is to prepare 16-19 year old students with a structured development pathway to a university academic education combined with sport.   

St Marys College is a Badminton England Premier School accredited with close links to Hull Badminton Centre, the Hull and East Riding Community Badminton Network and integral to the Premier League4Sport delivery. St Mary’s College supports local competitions with players and young leaders for The Center Parcs National Schools Competition, Grass Roots Badminton Competition and hosts BISI festivals.

Netball Academy

The Netball Academy is an exciting new addition to the St Mary’s College Sports Academy. St Mary’s College offers a two to three year specialist programme for students to develop and perfect their netball skills.

The Netball Academy is run in partnership with the Clubmark accredited Reckitt Benckiser Netball Club. The structured training schedule will allow 7-9 hours coaching delivered by England Netball qualified UKCC coaches.

Students will have the opportunity to play in the BCS North East Performance League as well as Under 19 Hull and Humberside School and Colleges competitions. They will have the opportunity to supplement their competitive opportunities through our links with local netball clubs. The aim is to prepare 16-19 year old students with a structured development pathway to a university academic education combined with sport.   

Using St Mary’s College’s excellent community and school links, students will have the opportunity to run various inter-school competitions for Hull and Humberside. They will also have opportunities to gain coaching experience. The Youth Umpire Award is taught to all Netball Academy students providing the opportunity to gain their umpiring qualification.

Trampoline Academy

The Trampoline Academy is an exciting new addition to the St Mary’s College Sports Academy. St Mary’s College offers a two to three year specialist programme for students to develop and perfect their trampoline technique.

The Trampoline Academy is run in partnership with the Hull High Fliers Trampoline club. The structured training schedule allows 7-9 hours coaching under the guidance of BG Level 5 High Performance Coach Julie Williams and the club’s performance coaching team. Julie has a long history of nurturing many students to local, regional, county, national and International success.

Students will have the opportunity to compete in the British Schools Trampoline competitions including the Yorkshire Schools and Northern Zonal Finals individually and within a team. They will have the opportunity to supplement their competitive opportunities through local, regional and national club competitions. The aim is to prepare 16-19 year old students with a structured development pathway to a university academic education combined with sport.

Using St Mary’s College’s excellent community and school links, students will have the opportunity to run various inter-school individual and team competitions for Hull. They will also have opportunities to gain coaching experience. The Proficiency Award Scheme Coach and Level 1 Assistant Trampoline Coach is taught to all Trampoline Academy students providing the opportunity to gain their coaching qualifications.

Coaching and Officiating Academy

The Coaching and Officiating Academy is an exciting new addition to the St Mary’s College Sports Academy. St Mary’s College offers a two to three year specialist programme for students who wish to develop their potential in sports coaching, teaching, officiating and event management.

Students will follow a structured timetable receiving a minimum of six hours coaching and officiating per week to refine their skills in addition to mentoring from St Mary’s College Physical Education department.

The Coaching and Officiating Academy is run by the St Mary’s College Physical Education department. Students will be offered structured opportunities to be involved in assisting members of the department in lessons and leading inter-house competitions and local primary and secondary inter school sport competitions within Hull and the Humberside area. This unique opportunity exclusive to the Hull and East Riding area for students to become exceptional sports leaders, officials, coaches and event managers.

Bespoke Programmes

St Mary’s College welcomes students who participate in sports from outside the listed Sports Academy activities. Bespoke programmes are available for students incorporating and building upon the core offer subject to initial interview and consultation.
