Modern Foreign Languages’ Department

Ethos

St Mary’s College has an inclusive approach to language teaching; all pupils study a language in Key Stage 3 and in Key Stage 4 almost all do a GCSE in at least one language.  Through learning a language children are introduced to another culture and learn to respect other ways of life.  This celebration of diversity fosters tolerance and openness and therefore plays an important role in the Catholic ethos of the school and the wider education of the child.

Skills

Acquisition of another language develops many skills and qualities within the learner.  Communication skills are advanced, students have a better understanding of grammar, can identify different types of words such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions etc leading to greater articulateness and accuracy both in the foreign language and their mother tongue.  The subject presents a lot of challenges such as how to learn and apply new rules, assimilation of new sounds and phonics as well as developing the perseverance and determination to overcome language barriers in order to experience success.

Year 8 Options

In Year 8 the students will have an opportunity to take a second language, alongside the one they started in Year 7.  They will continue both to GCSE level.  For their option they can choose the other language being studied in their year group.  For instance, if they are currently studying French in a French / German year group then they can take German for their option and vice versa.
