Aims of the course

Students will develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes. Students will gain an understanding of the structures authority and power within the UK’s political system and how these differ from those of other political systems.

AS Level (Year 12)

1 examination paper—Short answer, medium answer and essay questions based around the 4 key topic areas. (80 minutes)

Governing the UK

1 examination paper— Short answer, medium answer and essay questions based around the 4 key topic areas. (80 minutes)

 

A2 Level (Year 13)

Unit 3: Key Themes in Political Analysis

1 examination paper—3 short answer questions from choice of 5 and 1 essay from a choice of 3. (90 minutes)

Unit 4: Extended Themes in Political Analysis

1 examination paper—3 short answer questions from choice of 5 and 1 essay from a choice of 3. (90 minutes)

 Cost of the course

Subject to student numbers, a core textbook will be provided. Students may be make be asked to make a financial contribution to the cost.

Recommended Prior Learning

Grade B or above in English (as well as 5+ A*-C grades overall)

A keen interest in politics and current affairs is necessary.

Where can this course lead to?

The obvious progression from studying A-level Government and Politics is continuation at degree level.  However, the course also offers the development of skills which will assist in most careers. 

Students will develop their analytical skills which are beneficial in many career and academic fields.
