Welcome to the Academy of Music and Performing Arts

We are a forward thinking, rich cultured Academy, and one that I whole heartedly believe has the ability to enrich not only the artistic ability and creative vision of the students in our care, but also from a pastoral perspective in terms of progression routes to success. The Academy delivers Drama, Dance, Music, Musical Theatre as well as our Primary Music provision and our Peripatetic lessons across the St Cuthbert's trust.

The Academy is on a constant journey and we are active in cross-collaboration with external companies to provide a diverse learning experience for all our students. Our Academy ethos is built on hard work, collaborative ventures, an openness amongst colleagues, and a passion to ensure our students have the required skills to progress onto the next level and stage within their performing arts venture.

We pride ourselves on offering our students ‘more than a specification’ and with this as our driving force, we are proud to say our students gain a richer experience with us.

Our Arts curriculum is as follows:

Year 7 & 8: all students will take 1 hour of Music and Drama a week where the foundational skills are embedded to ensure successful progression routes at KS4.

Our Drama lessons look at: Improvisation, Scripted work, Devising, Analysis, Shakespeare & Narratives.

Our Music lessons look at: African Drumming, Jam-Pods, Samba, Garage Band, Logic Software & Film Music.

When students approach KS4, we offer the following qualifications:
Level 2 BTEC Tech award Acting
Level 2 BTEC Tech award Musical Theatre
Level 2 BTEC Tech award Dance
Level 2 BTEC award in Music
GCSE Music (Edexcel)

At KS5 we offer
Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts
Level 3 BTEC Foundation Diploma in Acting
Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Dance
Level 3 BTEC in Music

Our Sixth Form qualifications currently consist of separate qualifications in both Performing Arts and Music. At St Mary’s College, we are proud to deliver an educational programme that prepares students for University, Drama school, professional Performing Arts colleges and Conservatoires.

St Mary’s College is proud to be one of the first Royal Shakespeare Company Lead Associate Schools. Having piloted the scheme for the RSC, St Mary’s is now building partnerships with other secondary, primary and special schools in the region. The partnership includes our regional venue Hull Truck Theatre enabling our students to take part in an annual festival either at Hull Truck or at St Mary’s. As well as innovative teaching of Shakespeare, our students have opportunities to visit Stratford upon Avon to see productions and take part in a residential work experience programme at this world class organisation. The Royal Shakespeare Company regularly brings productions to St Mary’s College.

Our Academy of Music and Performing Arts has recently been awarded as a recognised school for the CDMT (Council for Dance, Drama, Music and Musical Theatre). This is an acknowledgement from the Council that the teaching, learning, experience of staff and the safety of our students is of the highest standards. We are one of the only Secondary Schools in the UK to be awarded this status.

Our performance calendar is both varied and exciting from our ambitious annual productions, through to our Dance showcase, Music concerts, and our bi-annual Arts festival: SMArts Festival which are all well respected within the city and offer the audience a chance to see the stars of tomorrow.

Facilities:
The Drama Department has its own building which houses a studio space and traditional classroom for theory lessons as well as faculty offices. Our purpose built ‘Theatre of Dreams’ is only 2 years old and has state of the art lighting and sound facilities. It also boasts its own fly tower. In partnership with this, we have a large school hall which includes an in-house costume, prop, and set store.

Our Music Department boasts its own building and comprises of a large open plan classroom, a full computer suite fitted with Mac computers and keyboards and a Jam-Pod station. There are several smaller rehearsal rooms as well as designated instrumental store areas.

Dance is situated and taught in a purpose-built Dance studio. Here you will find natural light, high quality sound equipment based within the busy Sports Academy.

If you require any further information on the Academy provision at SMC, please do feel free to contact us. We are committed to providing the highest quality of Arts Education and our huge range of student success and longevity within this area of business is outstanding.
